How to Make Your Own Reusable Mask

Updated: Jun 3

WHY?

During this pandemic the entire world stopped and all of us were acting towards a common goal: reducing the spread of this virus. We took this break to rethink our movement and the use of our resources. For this reason, we started creating the pouches from leftover fabric and the tote bags from old tablecloths. After that, some companies came to us with a clear message: “we want to protect our employees from this pandemic with masks, can you help us?”. We gathered a Belgian network of people who were willing to help us. Together, we replied positively to the company's demands. We decide to also offer them to our individual customers. We tried to make them as fun and colourful as possible to spark smiles and happiness in this difficult period. With the leftover textile from the masks and old jeans, we also launched scrunchies in an attempt to give a second life to otherwise thrown away material.

We would like all of you to be able to ensure your safety and show transparency and this is why we made a tutorial of how you can make your own reusable mask easily with a possibility to add a filter. It is a one size fits all mask that can be adapted to your face thanks to the length of the elastics (see the video under).

MATERIAL:

  • 1 piece of fabric 22*35 cm

  • 2 pieces of fabric 5*12cm

  • Use cotton fabric: 1) can be wash at 80 degrees 2) you do not breath plastic 3) easiest material to sew on (optional)

  • Some pins

  • A pair of scissors

  • A measuring tape

  • A sewing machine

  • Some elastics: recommended 2 pieces of 35cm (variate according to your face size)

  • An iron

  • A pen

HOW?

The overall process is divided between ironing and sewing.

Tip: place both next to each other before you start.

Step 1:

Draw 2 pieces of fabric (the boss)

  • 1 piece of 22*35cm (large piece)

  • 1 piece of 5*12cm (small piece)

Step 2:

Report them on your cotton textile.

You should obtain 3 pieces one of 22*35cm and two of 5*12cm. (No margin needed)

Step 3:

Fold the large piece in two and mark it with an iron.

Step 4:

On the side of the opening, at 1cm from the hedge, mark a horizontal line of 5cm on each side.

Step 5:

Pin both layers and sew them with a sewing machine.

Step 6:

Open up your work and mark the folds with an iron.

Step 7:

Return the work and sew the two shown hedges with a straight stitch.

Tip: easier when sewing from the inside.

Result:

Step 8:

Fold back the work so the opening is downwards and at the top sew a straight stitch at 0.5cm from the border.

Step 9:

Fold the piece of work in two and mark it with the iron.

Step 10:

Open up and fold each side in the middle and mark the fold with the iron.

Step 11:

Reopen and flip your work arrow. You now have 3 different lines.

Step 12:

Fold the first line on the second and the third on the second as well. Mark it with your iron. Flip you work around.

Result:

Step 13:

Attach the corner with a straight stitch at 1cm from the hedge.

Step 14:

Place the two pieces of small fabric with pins as depicted on the picture below and sew them to the rest with a straight stitch.

Step 15:

Fold them both as indicated in the picture below (inside to outside) and iron both hedges.

Step 16:

Fold the corners as shown in the picture under and iron the corners.

Step 17:

Pin and sew the hedges 0.5cm from the border.

Step 18:

You have created two little tunnels on both sides in which you can include the elastics to fit your face size.

Step 19:

Close the elastics by making a node.

Step 20:

Your mask is now finished!! You have an opening to place a filter to avoid having it to wash it after every usage. As a reusable filter you can put a rectangle of molleton that can be washed under 80 degrees as well.
